And yet, it wasn’t until he attended a 2017 healthcare conference that he learned that a majority of patients and providers across Canada didn’t have access to the latest proven and effective medical treatments for Alcohol Use Disorder. He saw this knowledge and practice gap as a challenge and a call to action. From that time on, Dr. Harries and the AUD team: Travelled across BC and into Alberta, conducting 100s of presentations to 1000s of participants, including physician and clinician groups, First Nations communities, and at health forums and conferences. Helped develop provincial guidelines for the clinical management of high-risk drinking and AUD. Produced a documentary and a video series about AUD and treatments. Published a point-of-care clinical summary on the BC Emergency Medicine Network. Drafted a research article documenting success with AUD treatments. Started care pathway development for AUD sufferers presenting at the Emergency Department. On March 10th, he was honoured as the inaugural recipient of the Primary Care and Substance Use Trail Blazer Award. For several years, Dr. Harries criss-crossed the province, talking to 1000s of people including care providers, clinicians, judges, counsellors, and addictions services workers advocating for alcohol use disorder to be understood as a treatable medical condition. Thanks to this tireless dedication, many more people are aware of medications that, taken temporarily and as a complement to counselling and other supports, can successfully help just about anyone reduce consumption by easing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. "It's such a tremendous honour to be able to recognize Dr. Jeff Harries for his many, many contributions," says Cheyenne Johnson, executive director of the BC Centre on Substance Use, which created the award. “His tireless leadership as a health advocate and his unwavering commitment to improving how we treat people with alcohol use disorder has inspired colleagues and impacted the lives of countless people. Samara was motivated to work with CAUDS after a third-year family practice rotation in Princeton, BC. “I learned about the amazing CAUDS work being done in their community. Throughout my rotations, I saw how often the impact of a patient’s alcohol use was found incidentally upon presentation to the emergency department for a seemingly unrelated concern, and was struck by the importance of these moments as an opportunity to engage with patients about AUD.” Specifically, Samara is working on the CAUDS team as a part of the APPLAUD (Approaches and Pharmacotherapies for Patients Living with Alcohol Use Disorder) Action Series quality improvement project. In addition to her work as an Opioid Agonist Treatment nurse prescriber, Karen is also enrolled in the University of Calgary’s Master of Nursing program. There, she is completing a thesis exploring the connection between mindfulness, addiction recovery and peer support. Hayley’s bachelor's degree in cognitive science at McGill University in Montreal sparked her interest in neuroscience and psychology, especially regarding mental and physical health. She is excited to join CAUDS, this time as a research assistant, to help advance and promote effective treatment for AUD, and conduct literature searches and reviews to understand the current climate of AUD research and treatments. She aims to contribute to AUD research development and knowledge translation to spread information and awareness of AUD so it may improve the lives of those affected. In Hayley’s past position with CAUDS she assisted with quality improvement projects, literature reviews, knowledge translation, and the writing of an opinion piece to further the use of Baclofen and Ondansetron as an effective treatment option for AUD now published in the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine. Hayley will also continue her work on a manuscript started in her last term. It is based upon interviews with key policy makers and providers on their experience with women and AUD, with a focus on rural and remote communities. As a research intern, Stefan aims to work alongside community stakeholders to further understandings of AUD, develop strategic interventions to provide accessible care and treatment, and to effectively communicate and spread these interventions to the public. Specializing in Population/Public Health, Stefan’s research interests encompass maternal and child mental health, adverse childhood experiences, parent-child interactions, and risk factors for family violence and poorer child health outcomes. As alcohol use disorder is a public health concern and a risk factor for family dysfunction and violence, and as someone who has indirectly worked in the field of drug misuse and witnessed first hand-the adverse effects it can have on family functioning, Stefan hopes to assist in developing interventions that can prevent the adverse effects of excessive alcohol use. In addition to this research, Stefan is fascinated by the natural environment and has previously done some research regarding environmental preservation through field work. As part of this program’s FLEX project, she is currently conducting a literature review, compiling recommendations and best practices for incorporating more teaching about Alcohol Use Disorder in the Canadian medical school curriculum. Kyra grew up in Cranbrook, BC, and previously obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from UBC’s Okanagan Campus. Now studying medicine, she hasn’t set her mind on any specialty, but could see herself pursuing a career as a family physician. She also has a particular interest in mental health and substance use. “While I am the first one in my family to pursue a career in medicine, my dad has a background in social work and has passed down his passion for mental health and substance use work,” she says.
